The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
