Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the dying seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
