Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
